KGALAGADI NATIONAL PARK

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is in the Northern Cape region of South Africa and borders Namibia and Botswana.  Many people choose to visit all three countries but we only visited the South African side.  The best way to plan a visit to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is to visit their official website

There are no endemic parrot species here but the dedicated bird watcher will find some very interesting species like Sociable Weavers who make huge communal nests, not unlike Quaker Parrots.  There are some colourful kingfishers, rollers and bee-eaters here too.  Kgalagadi is best known for it's predators and most people will see lions here.  Other people reported cheetah and leopards in the park but we weren't that lucky.   The best thing to do is hire a car and make your own adventure.  Here is a sample of what you can see on just one day.

We stayed in two of the restcamps-Mata Mata which is near the Namibian border and Twee Rivieren which is near the Botswanan border to maximize our game viewing.

We did the evening game drives with the park rangers which revealed many nocturnal species you don't normally get to see as you must be inside the restcamp by dusk.

Nothing beats a Kalahari sunset!

Sociable Weaver nests are everywhere!
