San Francisco

You wouldn't normally think of San Francisco as an eco-tourism destination for parrot lovers, not until the famous book and movie "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill came out!  Author Mark Bittner told the heart-warming (and sometimes heart-breaking) story of the wild cherry-head conures that inhabit the Telegraph Hill area and have now spread all over the city.  They can also be seen in Ferry Park.   We only had one morning on a whirlwind trip to see them.  It's about a $7 taxi ride up the hill and you have a breathtaking view of the city below.  The parrots can be found pretty easily once you get up there, we are talking about aratinga conures!  In the photos below, you can see some of the flock.  The ones who don't have the "cherry heads" are juvenile birds and you can see the parents are very consciencious about looking after them.
